This is beautiful, Ellen. It makes me feel as if I'm right down in the depths with this creature. Very good.

Silly me ... clouds. But the colour scheme is so wonderfully aquatic.

Not so silly. It is a water dragon and I'm definitely implying water. But it's part of my Paleo Mythos series of mythical cave drawings. My son asked me to do an interpretation of a roll playing character he created, a shape shifting Japanese dragon called an Umi. So I shifted it into the paleo past. ;->

Gorgeous! I've been looking at the big version, comparing it with the first one you posted for Will and of course I'm trying to analyze your process :-) Is this all a single block? Did you add color after printing, or put varying colors on the block or ??? Please tell as much as you can without leaking any classified information.
At any rate, bravo! Did Will love it?

Hi Annie,

No secret formulae. ;-j This was a light print (one block btw) so I decided to play with the watercolor crayons. All the color is watercolor. They're so fun to play with. Some areas I colored then wet with a brush, other areas I wet the brush and took the color straight from the crayon (especially for tiny areas). They are so rich.

In the past I have used colored inks, and in that case I did a viscosity print, applying ink directly to the dragon with my finger, rolling other colors over it (there is a series of photos showing the technique farther back in the blog). I like that technique too, but the watercolor crayons are my new toy.

And yes, Will did like his Umi print. =8-]

A wonderful hippocampus. I particularly enjoyed the strong design and use of colour.
